CCC Free Autumn Seminar: Avoiding Costly Risks in Construction Contracts

20 August 2025

Construction Contracts: Managing Risk, Maximising Recovery

Managing risk under construction contracts is critical, but too often costly pitfalls only become clear when a dispute arises. Our upcoming free seminar is designed to help you anticipate and manage these risks from the outset, strengthening your position both during projects and in disputes, if they cannot be avoided.

Drawing on our extensive experience in resolving construction disputes, we will show how the lessons learned from dealing with claims and numerous adjudications can be applied proactively at contract stage and throughout project delivery to help attendees protect entitlements, strengthen recovery and improve outcomes on projects.

Whether you’re a subcontractor, main contractor, consultant or developer, the content is directly relevant to day-to-day contract and commercial management

What we’ll cover

This seminar will highlight key issues under both JCT and NEC contracts, focusing on the points that regularly give rise to disputes and significant financial exposure. Topics include:

  • Getting the contract right at the outset – avoiding hidden risks
  • Instructions, scope and variations
  • Delay, extensions of time, loss and expense
  • NEC compensation events
  • Conditions precedent and their impact on entitlement
  • Defects, contra-charges and allocation of liability
  • Practical record keeping – ensuring your records stand up in a claim
  • Risk allocation, in particular design responsibility and ground conditions
  • Retention, payment terms and protecting cash flow

Key benefits

  • Understand the contractual traps that cause disputes and claims
  • Learn how to protect entitlements and maximise recovery
  • Gain practical strategies that can be applied across JCT and NEC contracts

Who should attend?

Directors, Commercial managers, quantity surveyors, contract administrators and others involved in managing contracts and projects. The content is relevant to all parties in the contractual chain – from subcontractors to main contractors, developers and consultants.
